Background:  Far From Home is part of The Night Journey Series, which draws from Susan’s fascination with the unconsciousness and dreams.  Working with a sleep scientist, Susan was monitored and awakened from REM sleep, using the data and experience as a basis for her work.  Penetrating memory, the visual unconscious, and dream perception, the series is comprised of black and white photographs.  In Far From Home, Susan presents a theatrical and sacred world that references the ridiculous, the tragic, and the unexpected.   The viewer bares witness to the whimsical adventure of three children and their beloved pet into their own private world.  Using the shadow as metaphor, the image conjures up memories and dreams of finding a place where children can do as they please.  They all wear crowns fashioned from materials discovered and collected on the journey.  We can surmise that the children wear their crowns – a traditional symbol a power – to show that they are in command here. The shadows’ blurry, curving quality furthers the impression that the children are in a far off dreamscape.
