Background:  Birds of a feather is from the artist’s Almost Alice series, which illustrates Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  Over a three-year period, she made 45 images of the characters who make up this tale.  To create the Alices who appear in the series, Maggie scanned a different 19th century portrait young girl.  The Alice in Birds of a feather was taken from a wonderfully detailed daguerreotype.  Notice her formal dress and pose, and firm facial expression – all very common traits observed in portraits taken during the early days of photography. In this particular scene, Alice is having a strange and witty conversation with the Duchess.  Random elements are placed throughout the composition alluding to the conversation discussion place.  Here, Alice and the Duchess talk about various topics including flamingos, birds, pigs, and mustard.  The ornamental frame and monumental landscape in the background further the idea that the picture before us is out of the ordinary.
