Background:   Pregnancy is part of a painting series, which depicts important events in the lives of women accompanied with animals.  The work is a visual manifestation of the artist’s complex feelings about pregnancy.  While Junko is personally afraid of being pregnant, she has great respect for mothers.  For this reason, the images that she creates about pregnancy convey bravery and toughness.  The protagonist is a young woman wearing over-the-knee black boots who brazenly stares out at the viewer with large doll-like eyes.  She is with child and completely shameless about the current state and appearance of her body.  Flanked by two venomous black snakes, the woman holds onto their unhinged jaws, showing no signs of fear.  Her turquoise blue mane blows wildly as if under the influence of some supernatural force much stronger than Mother Nature.  Junko’s use of pretty blues and pinks, and stylized line and form create an image that appears charming and sweet at first glance.  However, upon further examination, we realize that this picture is about completely about power, strength, and energy.
