Pinta e niña is one of Fernando’s first paintings.  Observed throughout the composition are geometric and mosaic elements, organic forms, and harmonic lines for which the artist is known.  The title makes direct reference to the Pinta and Niña, two historic caravels (Spanish ships), which were sailed by explorer, navigator, and colonizer Christopher Columbus.  He sailed these ships on a historic sea voyage to America in 1492 when he set foot on the exotic and exciting world for the first time.  Through this work, Fernando tells a much different account of this well-known story.  Here, a little spirit of the forest is warning the indigenous people that the Europeans have arrived.  Rich colors and stylized patterns are beautifully arranged to create the characters and setting that make up this reflective tale.  The viewers are presented with a very unique visual language that is best described as multilingual.  Motifs and stylistic elements allude to Brazilian popular culture and Pre-Columbian indigenous art.
