Background:  Tin Machine #1 is the first in a series of paintings that memorializes the time and days when Crash was just getting started as a graffiti artist painting on New York City’s subway system.  The title makes reference to the metal cars that served as the artist’s canvas from 1975 to 1981.  The work presents the iconic colors of NYC’s subway grid suggesting the red, green and blue lines.  The key element to any graffiti piece is the highlight, and here, we observe CRASH’s signature glimmer in white just above the eye at the center.  The image is pushed very close up on the picture plane, giving the impression that it is projecting out into the viewer’s space.  There is a sense that CRASH is letting us in on his experience – the thrill and excitement of painting on the streets.
